When Can I Start Planting?

wallitsch

Spring fever has hit Kentucky and we are ready to get back out into our gardens. You might be wondering to yourself, when can I start planting? The answer is simple... it is NOW!

Trees & Shrubs:

If the ground isn’t frozen, you can start planting trees and shrubs now! This is the perfect time to get them in the ground, and with spring rains on the way, they’ll get the deep watering they need to establish strong roots.

Perennials:

It's easier to plant these once their foliage begins to grow back, typically around mid-April. You can plant them earlier in cooler weather, but be sure to cover them if a hard freeze is expected, as young leaves and blooms are vulnerable to frost damage.

Annuals:

You can start planting annuals once the risk of a hard frost has passed, typically in late April to early May. If you plant earlier, be sure to cover them whenever frost is in the forecast to protect against cold damage.

Tomatoes/Veggies:

If you're planning a vegetable garden, you can start planting now! Cool-season crops like broccoli, kale, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and collard greens can be planted earlier since they tolerate light frost. Warm-season crops like tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, and zucchini should be planted later, around late April to early May. In Kentucky, a common saying is, "Tomatoes go out after Derby," which is a great rule of thumb to follow!
